ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My appreciation for simplicity of design comes from a background of growing up on a farm in rural Ohio, where simplicity and efficiency were part of daily life, as was the application of form following function. I was raised to appreciate the beauty of simple things and expected to produce well-made work that could in turn be appreciated by others. Indeed farmers I knew took pride in having the straightest rows of corn or making a geometrically perfect gate. There was little time or need for additional adornment beyond what was necessary and practical. I was taught to see how everything in nature, in all its beauty, serves a purpose.

I took this appreciation to the College of Design, Art, and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati where I studied Industrial Design for two years and heard a mantra to simplify, simplify, simplify. I spent the next two years in the Department of Fine Arts with a concentration in sculpture. I worked primarily with wood and strived to make pieces with perfectly produced joints. At this time I also became interested in furniture design, which I still pursue along with jewelry design.

My interest in simplicity of structure and background in industrial design has certainly carried over into my jewelry. I want it to be striking in its simplicity and geometry. I want the nature of the material to speak for itself, whether it has a high polish or a scratched, industrial look. My inspiration comes from the material itself and how it responds to machining processes, as stainless steel is a very hard material. As such, it lends itself to simple, yet striking geometry. I certainly believe that less can be more, and am striving to achieve an understated elegance in each piece.

ABOUT STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel is a strong, durable steel alloy containing chromium and nickel. It will not rust ,tarnish or discolor your skin. Water will not harm it, but contact with household chemicals should be avoided. To maintain its finish, clean with soap and water with synthetic steel wool. While stainless steel is a very hard material, its surface will scratch if not handled with care.

Earring wires are made of surgical steel.
